-As Accident & Emergency, GOPD, Eye Clinic departments commissioned

The General Hospital, Imota, which was commissioned January 2nd, 2024, has continued to witness steady expansion in its quest to provide adequate medical services to the residents of its host community, lmota, and others in its environs.
This was also the main focus on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, when additional three departments namely the Accident & Emergency, General Out- Patient Department (GOPD) and Eye Clinic, were unveiled with the official commissioning of a structure within the medical facility.
The structure, which houses the Accident & Emergency and GOPD, as well as the hospital’s Pharmacy, Record Department, pay point and a large Accident & Emergency Hall with facilities, and the Eye Clinic which is an office located within a separate building, were commissioned by His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajibade Agoro, the Ranodu of Imota in the presence of the Chairman, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr (Mrs) Atinuke Onayiga and other dignitaries.

Recall that the representative of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Rep. Babajimi Benson who was represented at the commissioning, paved way for the establishment of the General Hospital, Imota, about two years ago after 40 years of waiting by the community, with the facilitation of an 80 – bed Mother & Child Facility equipped with state – of – the – art equipment.
Dr. Adenike Omosun, Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO), who also celebrated one year in charge, while welcoming the royal father and other guests, stated challenges encountered at the start of the hospital and how far it has come within two years.

“We are not just commissioning projects that are going to improve health services delivery in Imota, today is also the anniversary of my first year in office.
“When I assumed office, we had just the maternal and child center building at the back and there were challenges. We had no diagnostic laboratory either for diagnosis or imaging, and our services were also limited to the basics – obstetrics, genealogy and general out-patient, minor surgeries and pediatric.
“But a lot has actually changed, thanks to the support of committed people.

“We have set up a mini laboratory, including a vibrant blood bank. In the pipeline, we have the diagnostic centre that is going to be a state – of – art which will be commissioned any moment”, the Medical Director said.
She also added that the hospital is powered by a solar system which covers virtually every aspect of the hospital.
According to her, the Solar System was done by the Lagos State Health Service Commission which she said has also deplored more consultants to the hospital to enable the performance of more complex surgeries.

Dr. Omosun also said that the hospital ‘s services will greatly improve with the establishment of an eye clinic, the accident & emergency department and GOPD.
“We have improved our services with the eye clinic which was facilitated by One Sight Essilolosical Foundation and the Women Optometry of Nigeria.
“In addition to the eye clinic, we have also expanded by renovating a building which will be commissioned to serve as the General Outpatient Department and the Accident and Emergency. Thanks to the Health Services Commission”.

While stating that the hospital still has a long way to go, the MD/CEO said that the hospital plans to digitize its services.
“Hopefully before the end of year, we want to start our electronic medical records.
“Also, we want to expand diagnosis by the time our diagnosis centre is completed. We also intend to expand our eyes clinic by starting surgeries, and we intend to start this by the end of the year as well.
“Lastly, the two other services that we intend to start are physiotherapy and dental services. We are hoping that the people of Imota, do not have to go far away to get comprehensive medical services. We should have all of that in General Hospital, Imota”.

She also thanked Rep. Babajimi Benson, representative of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, and Odofin Adewunmi Ogunsanya led Ikorodu Division Peace Initiative Limited (IDPIL), for their continued support for the hospital.
Chairman, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr (Mrs) Onayiga, in her remarks, said that a lot of people have stories to tell in respect of Imota, when it appears that the town was not in existence because of lack of facilities and commended the Ranodu of Imota, His Royal Majesty, (Dr.) Oba Mudashiru Ajibade Agoro, for his persistent, regarding Imota and his determination to get things for his Kingdom.
She was thankful to the Ikorodu people, especially the Imota traditional ruler for turning around the General Hospital, Imota, from what it was.

“We have come to do something joyous and I know that many would still come, and I thank you all for coming.”
She thanked Essilolosical Foundation, iCare Foundation and other organisations that have been supporting the hospital.
Dr. Benjamen Eniayewun, Permanent Secretary (PS), Lagos State Health Service Commission, also expressing his happiness for how the commission and Imota town have come together to put the medical facility in place, was full of appreciation to the Ranodu of Imota.
“I want to thank our partners; this is the beginning and we pray that we will go higher.

“I know how far we have come to have this General Hospital, but I am most appreciative of the Kabiyesis’s commitments. He is a kind of traditional ruler that wants progress for his town with no compromise. He is passionate about his Kingdom.
“He is always clamouring for full General Hospital status for this hospital, insisting that it is not befitting referring to it as General Hospital Ikorodu, Imota annex.
“I thank Dr. Aletan, the hospital’s pioneering Medical Director who oversaw the General Hospital with others, for laying a good foundation. We never thought that it would stand but here it is not only standing but expanding.

Dr. Eniayewun also thanked the Ranodu for challenging the Health Commission to act and produce other General Hospitals after that of Ikorodu.
“I cannot forget when Kabiyesi referred to us as unproductive. We took up the challenge and today, we are transforming old facilities and establishing new ones.
“We are still going to put bigger structures here. MCC is still going to have its own structure too,” he assured.

The Permanent Secretary commended the foresightedness of the community in making a large expanse of land available for the hospital project, which he said made it easy for the government and others to bring more projects to Imota.
“So, we now have this hospital and we thank God that it has been able to stand. I want to urge every member of the public, not only from Imota but also its environs, to make good use of it because that is what will make it bigger.
“Once we start getting good patronage, and requests for services that are not available, that’s when the government will see the need to further expand it.

“The management are now asking for more staff, specialists and consultants, because the community is behind the hospital, and giving it necessary support.
“We are grateful and we want more of that. We have more support for the hospital and our staff. We want you to make them feel at home whenever they come here,” he said.
Ranodu of Imota, Oba Agoro, in his royal message, recalled his involvement in the acquisition of the land for a General Hospital in Imota, when he was a Councilor, emphasising that his community waited for 43 years to achieve the purpose.

“Today, I am celebrating the present Lagos State Government for taking over this structure and turning it into a General Hospital. We have had decades of waiting and all through, I have been involved through these four decades, first as a Councilor and now as a traditional ruler”.
The royal father also stated that the location was approved as a General Hospital in 1979, alongside those in Ijede and Agbowa, but that while those other two were implemented, a Primary Health Center was given to Imota.
Oba Agoro commended the representative of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Rep. Babajimi Benson, who, according to him, took up the matter of providing an hospital for Imot, to the Sustainable Development Goal (SSG) and culminating into the construction of an 80 – bed hospital within what today is known as the General Hospital, Imota.

“From there, we consulted together and the news reached the Governor, Babajide Olushola Sanwo -Olu, that we now have a structure that can accommodate a General Hospital and without much hesitation, he approved General Hospital, Imota, and this is where we are today.
“From there, I started pressuring the Permanent Secretary for necessary facilities which led to the approval of the renovation of the structure that we are commissioning today. It was the approval that made me return here to send the Ijede LCDA that was using here as its secretariat, parking because we know what is perhaps more important.
“The council was over 20 years old at this place, and it should be able to fend for itself.

“Today, we now have General Hospital, Imota, with a big structure, accident and Emergency centre and eye clinic, and also a diagnosis centre which has just been completed.
While hinting that a teaching hospital would soon be approved for Ikorodu Division, Oba Agoro also revealed that an orthopedic department has been donated for the General Hospital, Imota.
“For your information, someone has also donated an orthopedic department and land has been allotted for its construction within this premises.

“Very soon, we will have a teaching hospital in Ikorodu Division, and I want three departments in Imota, of which orthopedics is one.
“By the grace of Almighty, by the time that all the projects earmarked for this place are completed, General Hospital, Imota, will be the second largest around here.
“We still have about five acres at the back, and we are ready to accommodate any structure. We are ready because we have been waiting for over 40 years”, the royal father said.

Oba Agoro also commended Dr Aletan, the pioneer Medical Director who laid a solid foundation for the General Hospital, Imota, describing him as a rare kind of a man, while he equally commended the current MD, Dr Omosun and the health commission.
In his goodwill message, Rep. Benson, represented by Alhaja Monsurat Odumbo, described the landmark projects as important additions in the collective quest of making adequate healthcare services available for the people.
“It is with immense pride and joy that I join you today for the commissioning of these vital medical facilities — the General Out-Patient Department, the Accident and Emergency Centre, and the Eye Clinic.

“This landmark development represents a significant leap forward in our collective efforts to provide accessible, quality, and life-saving healthcare to our people. As we all know, health is wealth, and this facility stands as a testament to our commitment to ensuring that every resident of IMOTA LCDA and beyond, has access to world-class medical care”.
While commending the Ranodu of Imota, for his tireless efforts and other stakeholders — the medical professionals, engineers, administrators, and residents, the three -term lawmaker also assured of his commitment to championing initiatives that prioritize the well-being of his people, especially in the areas of health, education, empowerment, and infrastructure.
He urged that the facilities available should be maintained for adequate service delivery for the present and generations yet unborn.

Awards were presented to representatives of Women Optometry of Nigeria and Essilor.
